Maximizing Social Security Benefits

Be aware of Social Security’s Windfall Elimination Provision.

If you have 30 or more years of “substantial” earnings in a job where you paid Social Security taxes, you might be able to eliminate an offset of as much as 67% of your Social Security benefits, up to the 2012 maximum offset of $383.50! Every year has to be accounted for and you must follow the Social Security tables. We have the tables if you want to see if you qualify.

Be aware of Social Security regarding Government Pension Offset.

If you receive a pension from a federal, state or local government based on work where you did not pay Social Security taxes, but you are also eligible for Social Security from other employment, your spouse’s, widow’s or widower’s Social Security benefits may be reduced.
